That al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām came to Khaybar and found some young men whose elegance and strength impressed him. He said: "Who are these?" It was said to him: "Freedmen of Rāfiʿ b. Khadīj." He said: "And from where?" They said: "A slave belonging to some Bedouins married a freedwoman of his, and she gave birth to these." So al-Zubayr bought that slave, their father, for fifty dirhams and freed him. Then he took them out of Rāfiʿ's property and placed them in his own property. Then he came to Medina and sent for Rāfiʿ b. Khadīj and told him the news, and that they were his freedmen, saying: "If you have a dispute, go to ʿUthmān." So he came to ʿUthmān and told him the news, and told him what al-Zubayr had done and what he had said. ʿUthmān said: "Al-Zubayr has spoken the truth; they are his freedmen." He said: "So they are his freedmen to this day."
