Machine translation, not reviewed

I said to ʿAṭāʾ: "I gave away the walāʾ of my freed slave; is that permissible?" He said: "No," twice in succession. Yet I had heard him some time before that say: "There is no harm in a man giving away the walāʾ of his freed slave." He said: I said: "What is the difference between that and his permitting him to take as his patron whomever he wishes? For he has given his walāʾ to him and has given his walāʾ to another, and each is a gift."
