Chain of narrators

machine translationʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAwf b. al-Ḥārith, who was the son of ʿĀʾishah's maternal brother, that ʿĀʾishah narrated to him,

Machine translation, not reviewed

That ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr said, concerning a sale or a gift that she had given: "By God, ʿĀʾishah will stop, or I will place a restriction on her." ʿĀʾishah said: "Did he say this?" They said: "Yes." ʿĀʾishah said: "I vow to God that I will never speak a word to Ibn al-Zubayr." He said: So ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr sought intercession with her when her shunning of him had grown long. She said: "By God, I will accept no one's intercession for him." When this grew long for Ibn al-Zubayr, he spoke to al-Miswar b. Makhramah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Aswad b. ʿAbd Yaghūth, who were both of Banū Zuhrah, and said to them: "I adjure you by God to bring me in to ʿĀʾishah, for it is not lawful for her to vow to cut me off." So al-Miswar b. Makhramah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came, with Ibn al-Zubayr wrapped in their cloaks, until they asked permission to enter upon ʿĀʾishah. They said: "Peace be upon the Prophet, and the mercy of God. May we enter?" ʿĀʾishah said: "Enter." They said: "All of us, O Mother of the Believers?" She said: "Yes, enter, all of you," not knowing that Ibn al-Zubayr was with them. When they entered, Ibn al-Zubayr went through the screen, embraced ʿĀʾishah ؓ, and began to implore her and weep. Al-Miswar and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān also began to implore ʿĀʾishah to speak to him and accept him, and they said to her: "The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade the shunning that you have done, for it is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three nights." When they had said much to ʿĀʾishah by way of reminder and reproach, she began to remind them and weep, saying: "I made a vow, and the vow is serious." They did not cease until she spoke to Ibn al-Zubayr. Then she freed forty slaves in atonement for that vow. After she had freed the forty, she would remember that vow and weep until her tears wet her headscarf.
